Ibiza is widely recognised as a holiday and party destination across the globe. The island has been throwing epic proportion parties since the early 80s. In the electronic music world, it has always been an important meeting point from May to September for artists, promoters, journalists, and the punters.
What makes Ibiza different to other party destinations is the abundance of events happening every day and night of the week. There are about 28 clubs that host events on a regular basis. The amount of events is insane and can really makes you crazy when you have to make your choice!
House and techno and everything thing in between have a strong identity there, the Cocoon crew for instance are known for having established the after hours culture. Sven Vath was part of the first wave of hippies who arrived in the early 80s, and his Monday night residency is still one of the most respected and popular parties of the week.
My pal and I hesitated between Cocoon at Amnesia and Circoloco at DC-10, and we privileged the day and night format of the DC-10.
The DC-10 has a slightly different reputation to the other superclubs of the island. It started as a free party and then mutated into a nightclub but has always been praised for somehow having kept its underground roots. Its location and the low profile advertising policy they operate are one of the reasons of its success. Circoloco, the Spanish promoter, is celebrating its 17th birthday this year, such a long run in this industry is a real sign that they are doing something right.
Every Monday during the season (May to September), DC-10 opens its garden at 4 pm until 9:30 pm. The djs play a fine selection of groovy and deep 4/4 tempo dance music on a powerful Void Acoustics sound system. The crispiness of the hi frequency and the warmth of the low frequency set the tone perfectly with Art Department on the decks. At 9 pm, the club was already nearly full and the dancers were enjoying the music, the sun, and tripping on the planes flying just above the club, as they are about to land.
The two indoor rooms, the 'Terrace' and the 'Main Room', open at 7 pm, with the likes of Visionquest's Ryan Crosson and Circoloco's Tanya Vulcano on warm up duty. The party really seemed to start when the sun disappeared, and that was the moment the Glaswegian Jackmaster was meant to start his set.

I have wanted to catch Jackmaster for the past 3 years, and to finally witness his extremely good dj skills on the oustanding Loud Professional sound system was a blessing. His set was excellent. It had a solid balance between classic tracks and the more obscure B side tracks. When DJ Pierre's 'Box Energy' acid bassline came in, it received a wild reaction from an already exhilarated crowd. His skills on the decks were really impressive, his mixes were very long and timed perfectly. His long time residency at Glasgow's very own Subclub has shaped his sharp mixing techniques and made him the dj he is now. No wonder he broke into Resident Advisor's top 10 DJ poll last year. I strongly recommend to anyone who enjoys a technical dj set to catch him play, his performance was very close to my current ideal of djing.
On the meantime, the Martinez Brothers were tearing up the Terrace with their big room sound of house and techno with a latino twist. Both in their early twenties, they are already superstars in Ibiza and it seems legit on a musical perspective.
At this point of the night, the vibe was high and the 2 dance floors were packed. The crowd at the DC-10 is very mixed: Spanish, British, Italians, Germans but also in age. The club is very well designed and organised, everything seem to be flawless and efficient, from the bars, the djs running order and performances, the general tidiness of the place, and the right number of attendees guaranteeing a certain level of comfort to the dancers. I was really impressed with the clear, yet powerful sound system the two indoor rooms are equipped with. Moreover, you really feel the family vibe among the organisers, the artists and the loyal punters. This is clearly a very positive thing on an island full of tourists who are not necessarily aware of dance music culture.

French dj Dan Ghenacia, one third of the brilliant act Apollonia, is part of the extended family and has been spinning records at the DC-10 for years, his ability to create special moments is unquestionable. He delivered a tremendous closing set on the Terrace, especially his last 30 minutes when he got the dancers on their knees. He is a real digger and his set reflected that, most of the tracks he played had this special feeling, whether it was more house or techno orientated. When he turned the music off at 4 am, he was warmly applauded and it was well deserved.
In Ibiza, there is this feeling that the party never stops, and it was very much felt when we were getting out of DC-10 and heading back home. Many ravers were heading to Amnesia or Sankeys for another round of dancing moves...
